Revolutionizing Building Energy Performance: LIFE Projects at Sustainable Places 2025 (2025)

Did you know that our homes and workplaces are responsible for a staggering one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions? That's a problem we can't afford to ignore. But the good news is, innovative solutions are emerging, spearheaded by projects like those showcased at the recent Sustainable Places 2025 conference in Milan, Italy. Over 440 experts in design, architecture, and construction gathered to explore ways to make buildings greener and drastically cut their carbon footprint. Let's dive into some of the groundbreaking ideas that are paving the way for a sustainable future.

The LIFE program, a key EU initiative, is at the forefront of this revolution. "Renovating existing buildings to be smarter and more efficient is absolutely essential," emphasizes Pierre-Antoine Vernon, a LIFE Project Advisor. These LIFE projects are actively experimenting with new approaches to accelerate and improve building renovations, tackling market and regulatory obstacles. They're also empowering homeowners with the tools they need to assess and upgrade their own properties. But here's where it gets controversial... some argue that focusing solely on renovations ignores the embodied carbon in new construction materials. What do you think?

Take OneClickRENO, for instance. This project is piloting digital 'Building Renovation Passports' across several European countries, including Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece, and Italy. These passports act like a health check for your home, pinpointing energy inefficiencies and guiding homeowners toward the best solutions. Ana Sanchis Huertas from OneClickRENO explained at the conference that the goal is to provide citizens with personalized information related to their buildings. And this is the part most people miss... the data collected from these renovations will directly inform EU policymakers, helping them determine the most effective subsidies and grants to encourage further improvements. It's a feedback loop designed to drive real change.

Beyond individual homes, the conference also highlighted initiatives focused on larger-scale solutions. In the Netherlands, BUILD UP Speed has created a digital hub where architects can find a wealth of information, technologies, data, and real-world case studies to guide their renovation projects. FACILITA in Spain is establishing 'one-stop-shops' providing local authorities with comprehensive technical, financial, and legal advice for renovating public buildings. iEPB is working on integrating energy data from Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) with data from Smart Readiness Indicators (SRIs), creating a more holistic view of building performance. They were joined by other LIFE projects including SRI2MARKET, easy SRI, SmartSquare, EVELIXIA and SmarterEPC which promote SRI uptake across Europe. Many of these projects have formed clusters with other EU-funded projects to boost the use of EPCs and SRIs.

Andrei Vladimir Litiu, Executive Director of the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPB) Centre and an iEPB participant, noted that the discussions and collaboration at Sustainable Places 2025 demonstrated how these clusters are translating EU policy into real-world action. It's about taking ambitious goals and turning them into tangible results.

Another key area of focus was decarbonizing district heating and cooling networks. Projects like SUPPORT DHC, DHC-SwEEtch, ENABLE DHC, GREENHEATLIFE, and LOW2HIGH DH showcased their efforts to support planning and investment for district heating network operators. These projects are vital for reducing reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to more sustainable energy sources for heating and cooling.

All of these LIFE projects, along with the other participants at Sustainable Places 2025, are working to support the EU’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and the Renewable Energy Directive. These directives set ambitious targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption, and these projects are helping to make those targets a reality.

Ultimately, the Sustainable Places 2025 conference highlighted the power of innovation and collaboration in tackling the challenge of building decarbonization. But are these solutions enough? Are we moving fast enough to meet our climate goals? And what role should governments, businesses, and individuals play in accelerating this transition? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
