Billionaires Michael and Susan Dell are making a historic donation of $6.25 billion to encourage families to open 'Trump Accounts' for their children. This initiative aims to provide 25 million American children under 10 with an incentive to claim new investment accounts, established as part of Donald Trump's tax and spending legislation. The Dells' pledge, announced on GivingTuesday, is believed to be the largest single private commitment made to US children. It's also unique in that it will operate through investment accounts managed by private companies, dubbed 'Trump Accounts'.
Michael Dell, with an estimated net worth of $148 billion, expressed his belief that this program will foster hope, opportunity, and prosperity for future generations. The Dells plan to deposit $250 into each qualified child's account, with the Treasury launching the program on July 4, 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of US independence. Under the new law, the Treasury will deposit $1,000 into accounts for children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, with funds invested in an index fund tracking the stock market.
However, the initiative faces challenges. While the funds in the Trump Accounts may benefit children whose families or employers can contribute, they won't immediately address childhood poverty. Cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, and childcare, also part of the spending package, are expected to reduce support for low-income families. Michael and Susan Dell initially didn't envision such a substantial commitment, but they decided to increase their pledge over time, believing it's a better way to help America's children.
